Essential Oils & Aromatherapy

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for bathing and healing. What is aromatherapy anyway? “I hear people talking about it, but I don’t know what it is” is something I hear all the time as a skincare professional.

Lavender essential oil image from 123 RFWhen you peel an orange, you instantly smell the aromatics from the orange peel. The same thing happens when you rub a sprigs of lavender together, the aromatics are activated. Technically, what you are smelling is the essential oils that have been released into the air causing this pleasant aroma. The aroma itself is calming, soothing, stress reducing, and of course really pleasant.

Essential oils can actually come from seeds, plants, roots, flowers, peels, and numerous other sources producing numerous types of essential oils. I say numerous types because different essential oils are used for different purposes yielding different results.

Essential oils for the Skin

Essential oils are great for treating several types of skin and skin conditions. (I’m not a doctor, and I recommend consulting a physician or naturopath for essential oil treatment). However, essential oils are well documented for their ability to improve blood circulation and as well as helping your immune & digestive systems.

Essential Oils for Healing

Essential oils are also used for antibacterial purposes as well for treating cuts, scrapes, bug bites, and preventing skin infections.

Essential Oils for Relaxation

The aromatics in essential oils are known to help relax, rejuvenate, and revive people with their “therapeutic” effects. Hence, aroma therapy. Remember that lavender sprig? When you rub the sprigs together don’t you feel like letting out  a long sigh? (ahhhhhhhh!)
